Accreditation
Your Center is working hard – staff, board of trustees and volunteers – as it seeks reaccreditation from the American Association of Museums. The Center was first accredited in 2001. Reaccreditation is required every eight to 10 years. Only approximately 750 museums in the country have achieved the level of accreditation. The Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas is one of only seven in the state. Benefits of accreditation include credibility and accountability, a clearer sense of purpose, leverage and support, sustainability and a stronger institution. “Accreditation is a time to examine, reflect and strive to enhance our ability to carry out the museum’s mission with renewed commitment to the public trust and to future generations,” says Kinshasha Holman Conwill, former director of Studio Museum of Harlem. The accreditation process involves a year of museum self-study. This is where the Center is now. This involves gathering information and evaluating Center policies, activities and processes. An onsite visit by AAM volunteers will follow the completion of the self-study. The American Association of Museums, founded in 1906, is dedicated to promoting excellence within the museum community. Through advocacy, professional education, accreditation and guidance on how to achieve current professional standards of performance, AAM helps museum staffs, boards and volunteers across the country serve the public. |
